the paradox of purpose
Our “life purpose” is the overarching journey that gives some kind of shape to life. We might say that we seek simply “happiness” – although the term really means nothing until we understand how happiness manifests itself for us. Or we might set out to feel closer to nature. After defining our purpose, the next step is to identify the changes that will bring it to fruition (letting go of material attachments; moving to a rural community). These are our goals. To achieve them we set objectives (giving up certain luxuries; learning skills that we can use to gain rural employment).
With regard to finding relaxation, what matters is that the trajectory of our life purpose provides a shelter in which we can genuinely find calm. There is a pattern to our life, and however accurately the pieces come together, we know at least that we are not merely drifting. We can relax without feeling that we are neglecting the inner self.
To be content in the shelter of our purpose, we must feel that it is capable of being turned into reality. In other words, we must overcome fear of failure. If we become too “attached” to the goal, we maximize our chance to fail. The paradox is that in order to serve our vision we must specify our goals and objectives, but we must also be prepared to let go of them. This is not a sign of feeble mindedness or lack of commitment: rather, it is a sign of wisdom. Leting go of our goals, we become more relaxed in our attitude toward them. The journey ceases to be burdensome and stressful because we don’t have to strive: life will present us with the right opportunities, and we would be wise to have faith in this prospect. Our life, in any case, is a trajec tory, not an imperative. We can retain our integrity even as we modify our aims.
